The Ford GT was conceived as a tribute to the GT40, which dominated endurance racing in the mid-1960s, winning Le Mans four consecutive times (1966–1969).
As part of its 100th anniversary, Ford promised a return of the GT40.
To bring the GT to fruition, Ford enlisted its most talented Tier 1 partners: Mayflower Vehicle Systems for the aluminum spaceframe chassis, Jack Roush for the hand-built supercharged V-8s and Steve Saleen for the assembly and drivetrain installation.
It took three years, but in 2005, the GT40 returned, now simply called the GT.
GT Production was limited to an exclusive two-year run with approximately 2,000 rolling out of Ford’s Wixom, Michigan assembly factory per year.
The Ford GT is a street-legal supercar that proudly proclaims its American heritage and winning style. It features a 550-horsepower 330ci (5.4L) Ford small-block V-8 backed by a six-speed manual transaxle. Its signature sound comes via an Eaton 2300 roots-type supercharger.
The Ford GT propels from 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds with a top speed of 205 mph. Race fuel is not required. It is engineered to operate safely on premium unleaded pump gas.
Let’s look at the design, which auto journalists and car collectors unanimously called a home run.
Tribute elements include the clamshell rear hatch with engine view, dual painted racing stripes and side air scoops reminiscent of the original GT40’s functional design.
The cabin clearly makes driver engagement its top priority. Retro-inspired toggle switches and round aluminum-accented gauges recall the intent of the original GT40. As this is a street-legal supercar, the space for the driver and one passenger includes leather trimmed seats with a carbon-fiber structure, leather trimmed instrument panel and door panels, a tilt/telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated controls, a McIntosh premium audio system, air conditioning and power windows.
Extra-cost factory options not previously called out include BBS light weight forged aluminum wheels, 18-inch front and 19-inch rear; and painted brake calipers.
Original MSRP was $155,345 but this highly sought-after collector’s car has appreciating significantly in value with most examples now selling for over $400,000.
That makes this grand-prize 2005 Ford GT the single most valuable dream machine ever offered in Dream Giveaway history!
